Talk (Belief / MIB / MIB 2 / Polar Express)
Tonight we're going to talk about belief
We're going to start by watching a clip from
29 mins - 40 mins from the start of the tape. Will Smith turns up
for a interview and is offered a job with the MIB.
Scenes 5 (14 mins) - 7 (23 mins). In this scene, Laura sees
something a bit strange.

Scene 17 - Scene 19. See my blog entry
here. Middle bit
There are a lot of things in this life that we find hard to believe in
For some, that is aliens, for others God, Santa, Tooth fairy, or even
So we're going to spend some time looking at some of the things that
people struggle with when it comes to God
Please speak freely and remember, I don't have all the answers!
Point 1: God Created the universe and everything in it
[Refer to the points outlined in
How do we know if god exists?]
What do you think about that?
What do you believe?
What do your parents think?
What do they teach you at school?
How do we know if this statement is true?
What are the alternatives?
The universe has always been here
The universe was created by some natural process - big bang / evolution
It's all an illusion
What do you think about these alternatives? General speaking Christians believe that God created the universe, people
etc. in 6 days just like it says in the Bible
However, there many people who believe that big bang / evolution had some part
the six "days" should be though of as six periods of time
big bang / evolution was the process that God used to created life...God
still started it off
evolution that occurs in a limited way...it does not create new
there are others who just think it's a story used to pass on a
Some things to point out
Evolution can only be partially proved etc.
The fossil records do not prove evolution occurred in the way we are
The Bible is not a science text book
I personally believe...
Point 2: In a world where "anything goes" is there such a thing as good and
evil / right and wrong?
What do you think?
Where do you think our ideas of good and evil / right and wrong come
Our legal system is based on the 10 commandments...the Bible
Everyone from the moment they are born seem to have a sense of what is
right or wrong
Where does that come from?
How does that fit in with evolution? "the survival of the
fittest" In our culture, the attitude is "
can do anything they like as long as it does not harm others"
What do you think that means? Other attitude is: what is may be true for you, is not true for me
What do you think that means? It means that your idea of good / evil may not be the same as theirs
Worst case you end up with people like Hitler thought it was ok to kill 3
I don't know about you, but that does not seem to tie up with my natural
idea of what seems right and wrong
We're talking about this because the Bible has clear ideas of what is
right and wrong
It's not a case of "your truth or my truth"
The Bible says it is wrong to kill, steal, to lie and so on...
There are no excuses...which is not a popular message....
But some how most of us know that stuff's wrong...even though we might not
live it out...
It's connects with us...
Some Christians would argue that the built in sense of right and wrong
shows us that God made us
We wouldn't need it if we were evolved from the slime!
It can't be explained biologically
Point 3: How do we know that God exists?
history, in all cultures of the world, people have been convinced there is a
billions of from all times, races, cultures people have come to the same
How do you explain this? It's like us humans are made to look for something beyond what we can
Why do you think we do that? There's no "evolutionary" explanation for this that I'm aware of
- the universe points towards an intelligent designer
if the moon was a little closer..
if we were a little nearer or further away from the sun...etc...
the presence of Jupiter
At a personal level it helps me make sense of the world I live it
These are difficult questions, to which there are no magic answers...but
we have some clues
That's why faith is so important...
"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not
see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that
the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made
out of what was visible." None of us know what each other really thinks about this God stuff, but if
it's something that you really want to get to grips with
Ask God to help you understand it, to make it real to you
If that's what you really want, I believe will show you....
