Look at how we handle our own anger and consider what the Bible has to say
about it
Talk Introduction
Our subject tonight is Anger
We’re going to start by watching the first 9 minutes of Anger Management
[Anger management]
0 mins – Start of the phone
9 mins – He is sentenced to one month in anger management
The middle bit
According to the judge, Dave has a problem with Anger…
What do you think about his behaviour on the plane?
Was he provoked?
How would you react if you were in his situation?
What kind of things make you angry?
Stress / when things go wrong
People who don’t think things through
Do you ever get angry with yourself? Over what?
The Bible says
James 1:19-20 ”My dear brothers and sisters, always be willing to listen and slow to
speak. Do not become angry easily, because anger will not help you live the
right kind of life God wants”
Why do you think the Bible says that?
What happens when people get angry?
How do you act when you are angry?
Shout / throw things / hit out / kick things
If we’re not careful, we can end up doing things we’ll regret…
I know I have…breaking things, saying things…
[How will anger effect you in the long run?]
Saying that, the Bible tells us that Jesus got angry on a number of
occasions…
We don’t have time to look at the all now, but here is one example…
Mark 3:1-6 ”Another time when Jesus when into a synagogue, a man with a crippled hand
was there. Some people watched Jesus closely to see if he would heal the man
on the Sabbath day so they could accuse him. Jesus said to the man with the
crippled hand, ‘Stand up here in the middle of everyone.’ Then Jesus asked
the people, ‘Which is lawful on the Sabbath day: to do good or to do evil, to
save a life or to kill?’ But they said nothing to answer him. Jesus was
angry as he looked at the people, and he felt very sad because they were
stubborn. Then he said to the man, ‘Hold out your hand.’ The man held out
his hand and it was healed. Then the Pharisees left and began making plans
with the Herodians about the way to kill Jesus.”
Why do you think Jesus got angry?
What was he angry about?
They had lost the plot…
They were making out that God wasn’t bothered with the sick man, because
it was the Sabbath…there day of rest
According to Jesus, that’s not true…God is always there...what ever the
day
What’s the difference between Jesus’ getting angry and people like us
getting angry?
Jesus was standing up for what was right…for justice…
Sadly, we tend to get angry because we can’t get our own way…
Too often, we try to help ourselves…when Jesus is trying to stand up for
others…
Psalm 103:6 – 10
God “does what is right and fair”
God “does not become angry quick”
When we feel angry, what can we do to calm down?
[Write these out on A4 while saying this]
Don’t react…count to 10
This can confuse some people big time!
Deal with the problem later…
Check out your facts…
Think – why am I reacting like this…
Maybe your just having a bad day and taking it out on someone else
The problem could be elsewhere…
Try and see the other point of view
Get help…
Try to do something…for example:
[Anger management – second clip]
33 mins – the word ‘chill’ are floating in the bowl.
34 mins – he is in the car singing ‘I feel pretty’
35 mins – scene ends and cuts to the office
Conclusion
If you are willing, I’d like us to finish by praying for each other
Think...How would you like God to help you deal with your anger?
