Tonight we are going to talk about something that most of us get excited
about: music
Start by watching a well known clip from Wayne's World
This is one of those famous movie scenes which is about the music...
[Wayne's World]
Show the first 8 min of the film up to the point where they park the car
and speak to the police man. This includes the Bohemian Rhapsody
scene.
The middle bit
That clip shows quite clearly that music is an important part of Wayne and
Garth's lives...and that the Love Queen...
What kind of music do you get excited about?
So what kind of music makes you cringe?
What's wrong with it?
Has your musical taste changed as you have grown older?
So what's the big deal about music...why does music have such an effect
on us?
Some people say that music changes the way they feel...
Do you agree?
How does music make you feel?
The Bible tells us that we should...
Ephesians 5:19 "Speak to each other with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and
making music in your hearts to the Lord"
What do you think the Bible 'making music in your heart' means?
What do you think a 'spiritual song' is?
Some people think it means song that makes you think about God
Other's think it means singing to God in a special way that only happens
when God comes come into you (singing in the spirit - some of them won't
understand that phrase)
Do you think that music can be a spiritual thing?
Do you think that the artists / bands you listen to are speaking in
spiritual songs...making music to the Lord?
Some artists / bands have been accused of doing the opposite...
People like Marilyn Manson / Ossy Osborne have been accused of writing
songs that have made people commit suicide
Do you think this is possible?
How / why?
The Bible does say...
Proverbs 25:20 "Singing songs to someone who is sad is like taking away his coat on a cold
day or pouring vinegar on soda"
How do lyrics affect you?
Do they speak to you?
Do they make you happy / sad / excited / angry?
Anyone heard Rage against the machine Killing in the name
of...bullet in the head...they can get you going...
Should we ban certain kinds of lyrics?
Conclusion
The Bible has a lot to say about music
Perhaps it's like a special language to God, or us...
We are told to worship God with music...so it must be a good thing
What do you think about the music we sing in Church?
What kind of music makes you want to worship God?
Psalm 150 Praise god in his holy house of worship, praise him under the open skies;
Praise him for his acts of power, praise him for his magnificent greatness;
Praise with a blast on the trumpet, praise by strumming soft strings;
Praise him with castanets and dance, praise him with banjo and flute;
Praise him with cymbals and a big bass drum, praise him with fiddles and
mandolin.
Let ever living, breathing creature praise God!!
Richard Kuntz... hot himself in the head while he was listening to 'The
Reflecting God' by his favorite band, Marilyn Manson...II would say the
music caused him to kill himself
