Dirty Vegas 'Day's go by' video - mail us if you can't find a copy
Corinthians bits on slips of paper - plenty of them.
Something to do with love to pass round at end for each group?
Intro:
Today is St Valentines day. What is it all about?
Love
To start us off thinking about love, we're going to watch the video of a
song called Days Go By, by Dirty Vegas.
What do you think is the story behind the video?
The bloke used to have a girlfriend who he really loved, but she left him.
Now he wants to try and get her back.
Why was he dancing?
Sometimes stuff happens and we can find it hard to move on....or accept
what has happened to us
How do you think he felt?
Do you think that if they split up, they could really have been in
love?
Might get stories here about parents splitting up, BTW...
Or might they still love each other?
What is love all about?
Really liking someone, boyfriends, girlfriends, playing scrabble,
caring, being there...
I have a bit from the Bible here that says something about love.
Mathew 22:37-39 P948 "...and the second command is like the first: 'love your neighbour as you
love yourself' "
When the bible says your neighbour, it isn't referring to the person who
lives next door to you so much as it is talking about all the people you know,
and those you don't too!
Do you think the bible is asking you to love these people in the
boyfriend/girlfriend style love?
No...
Maybe there are two types of love...
What ways might we show love to people (in general)?
Being nice to them, being patient with them, being there for them,
helping them...
The bible talks a lot about love, and there's one bit of the bible that
you might have heard before that talks about what love is. It's from a book in
the bible called Corinthians, which is actually a letter by a guy named Paul,
which he wrote to the people in a place called Corinth.
1 Corinthians 13: [Get people to read one of the verse each, it doesn't
really matter what order they are in. ]
Love is patient.
Love is kind.
Love is not jealous.
Love does not boast.
Love is not rude.
Love is not all about "me, me, me".
Love is slow to get angry.
Love is not pleased by wrong things, but is delighted with those
things that are right.
Love lasts through anything and everything.
Love never ends.
The second command is: 'love your neighbour as you love yourself'
Nothing above us, nothing bellow us, nor anything else in the whole
world will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Do you think people's love is always like that?
No
Whether people get love right or wrong, one thing that the Bible tells us
is that God always loves us, whoever we are, what ever we have done
Romans 8:35-39 P1152 "...nothing above us, nothing bellow us, nor anything else in the whole
world will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ
Jesus our Lord"
What do you think that means?
Response
Love isn't always an easy thing, and we can struggle to show love for one
another (e.g. not in the boyfriend/girlfriend sense).
Earlier we heard what the Bible said love is all about. It would be good
to think about those things that we find hard, be it whether we find it hard
to be patient with people, or we are boastful or arrogant, or whatever.
As a way of praying about this, and asking for help in this, I thought it
would be good if you thought about it for a while, then take a piece of paper
with the thing you struggle with, get some blu-tac, and stick it on the big
LOVE letters.
